Experience
To summit Mount Kilimanjaro, a certain level of physical fitness and mental determination is required. While prior mountaineering experience is not necessary, it is beneficial to have some hiking experience and be comfortable with long, strenuous treks. Additionally, it is important to have a positive mindset, adaptability and the ability to follow the slow pace set by your guide. Training and preparation, both physically and mentally, are key to increasing your chances of a successful summit. Please visit our training page for more information and our safety page for our safety protocol.
Why This Trip?
Last June I climbed Kilimanjaro as part of an all Black women team and had a truly life changing experience. The climb itself was unforgettable but it was the entire experience - from the preparation, to the hikes leading up to summit day, to connecting with my fellow climbers, porters, and guides - that transformed me. I’m hosting this trip because I want everyone to be able to experience what I did!
I’m calling this trip “Alison Mariella Désir and Friends Climb Kilimanjaro” because I’m inviting folks from all aspects of my life to join me. Harlem Run, Run 4 All Women, Out & Back Community, PNW crew, friends abroad, and more - people of all ages, races, levels, abilities - I invite you to join me! I’m hoping that this trip - from the training to the experience itself- teaches you that you are stronger and more capable than you know and that you are ultimately able to apply this confidence and mindset to other aspects of your life (as I have).
Whether you’ve never done anything like this or this is a trip right up your alley, there is a place for you. The guides are so invested in helping you reach the summit whether it takes you 5 hours or 15.
Included in the price of the trip are 3 zoom calls (scheduled January, March and June) to go over training and to build connection and 2 in person hikes in Washington state (for those of you who are local or interested in coming West).
Let’s accomplish this massive goal together!
